Celebrate Purim with Amphora’s Hamantaschen Cookies!
Not only is Amphora Bakery gearing up for Easter weekend, our
team has been doing a lot of mixing, kneading, chilling, cutting, filling and
shaping these past few days prepping for Purim!
Purim is a Jewish holiday commemorating the release of the Jews
from an extermination plan in a biblical text named Book of Esther.
Purim is celebrated in February or March depending the year, and
this year we are celebrating Purim on March 24th! To celebrate this
holiday, Amphora Bakery is turning out dozens of Hamantaschen - hand shaped
triangular cookies that are filled with assorted fruit fillings which are a
traditional part of the Jewish celebration of Purim, an observance that begins
this evening.
The Purim story
In the Purim story, Haman,
the prime minister under Persian King Ahashverosh (called Ahasuerus in English)
wanted all of the Jews of Persia killed. He was angry that another minister,
Mordechai — a Jew who had help foil a plot against the king — refused to bow
down before him.
Mordechai foiled Haman’s
plot with the help of Mordechai’s cousin, Esther, who finally acknowledged to
her husband that she was Jewish — saving herself and the rest of the Jews.
Haman ends up getting killed on the gallows he was going to use to hang all the
Jews and Hamantaschen are served as a reminder of that story.
One of the traditions of
Purim is giving gift baskets of Hamantaschen to friends and family members.
Here at Amphora Bakery, we have Hamantaschen cookies available for purchase,
stop by and sample some today!

Happy
National Pi Day!
Nobody should need an excuse to eat a pie, but if you do
need one, here it is! It is National Pi Day!
National Pi Day is celebrated on March 14th (03/14) because the constant Pi is
approximately 3.14. How ironic that the shape of a “pie” tends to be round!
Traditionally Pi Day has been observed in many ways, including eating pie,
throwing pies and discussing the significance of the pi symbol. The earliest
known official celebration was organized by Larry Shaw in 1988 at the San
Francisco Exploratorium marching around its circular shapes and consuming fruit
pies. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pi_Day)
Since eating a pie for National Pie Day is a tradition, and
what is better to celebrate National Pi Day than enjoying a pie from Amphora
Bakery!
Our Cake and Pie of the month (Irish Coffee Cake and
Black and Tan Pie) are still available, but if you prefer, we have a lot of
different pies that will be perfect and decorated for this occasion. Stop by
Amphora Bakery for a selection of our full size pies, or swing by Amphora
Restaurant or Diner for a slice!

The 2nd Annual Adult Gingerbread House Decorating Workshop
Amphora Bakery is Starting New
Traditions with Adult Gingerbread
Decorating Workshops
We
love this time of year! We were really pleased to hold our 2nd
Annual Adult Gingerbread House Decorating Workshop hosted at Amphora’s Diner Deluxe
in Herndon on December, 16th 2014.
Participants
enjoyed wine and hors d’oeuvres as they received hands-on-instruction from our
team leader, Ms. Donna Mezzullo from Amphora
Bakery. Our Guest let their imaginations run wild as they built custom
designed gingerbread homes utilizing our premium decorating candies, figurines
and sugar confections. From frosted candy roofs to fences and Christmas
sleighs, it was truly an evening full of whimsical fun.
We
would like to wish everyone who participated in the 2014 Adult Gingerbread Decorating
Workshop a wonderful holiday season. We hope you find time to spend with family
and friends and create your own traditions and memories. Happy Decorating!

partnered for the second year in a row with Cakes Against Cancer, INOVA Children’s
Hospital and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation to host the annual
Gingerbread House Decorating Party for the Pediatric Oncology Patients at INOVA

Cakes Against Cancer is excited to
extend our partnership with Tyler’s Kids Outreach, INOVA Children’s Hospital

festive Gingerbread House Workshop Event. TKO and The Washington Redskins are
an exciting addition to our current partners.
“We love planning and hosting this
event as we see firsthand how our involvement can positively affect the lives
of Children. Plus it has been a pleasure working with Tyler and his foundation.
The kids simply light up when they get the chance to meet him and his team
members,” says Kerrin Delaney, Community Relations Coordinator for Cakes Against
Cancer and Marketing Director for Amphora Bakery.
This year Tyler Polumbus was joined
by his two teammates, Josh LeRibeus, and Tom Compton who dove
right in to the house decorating. Keeping with their competitive spirit, they
even had a few of the kids judge their favorite house of the three players, and
even though they had their favorites we all know that at the end of the day
everyone is a winner! Here is a sneak peak of the decorated gingerbread houses…
